Funny, Silly & Awkward Nanny Stories

We have all been there. When you just start working for the family, and you do your best to show how amazing you are, but somehow you end up doing something embarrassing. Over, and over, and over again. It’s funny now, but I bet in that moment you just want to drop dead and stop existing.

For example, when I was live-in, there were way too many half naked encounters happening. One time I forgot I wore a dress, and I lifted my leg in the air – my boss definitely saw it. all of it.  Also, I locked myself out of hotel room (kids were inside) while on business/vacation trip with family. Should I continue?

I am finally in a place where I can laugh at (way too many) mistakes and awkward situations, but in those moments – that was bad. Really bad.

Some of the nannies chose to share their stories with us, so we can laugh, blush, feel bad and silly and most importantly, remind ourselves that it really is not that bad, even though it seems like the end of the world at the moment.

Awkward Nanny Stories

*That awkward moment when the nanny leaves a wipe INSIDE the diaper.

*One of the babies I watch needed his diaper changed, so I bent down and picked him up of the floor. As I picked him up he grabbed the bottom of my dress and when I lifted him up my dress came with. Worst part.. Dad Boss walked around the corner at the same time.

*My most awkward moment came when we were having an Easter party with our nanny group. We had 5 nannies and 12 children between us, from 0-5. One of the babies pulled up on a table, accidentally pulling a Pottery Barn wrought iron and glass candle grouping off of the table. It shattered everywhere. Unfortunately, since I was hosting, I had to tell Mom Boss about what happened–the other nanny of the child that did the damage claimed ‘not my problem’. Mom Boss was not happy and I had to grovel A LOT to get back into her good graces. unsure emoticon Not only awkward but painful!!

*My most awkward nanny moment was my first week at my current position. New mom of the almost 3 month old was still at home (in and out) during the week as I got acclimated. At one point during the day, Mom was in the kitchen, baby was visible in living room and I ran out to my car to get something. It was a quick trip, didn’t take my phone or keys. Unbeknownst to me, the back door was set so that it locked behind me when I shut it. When I came back from my car, I was locked out!! I knocked and knocked. No answer. Ran to the front, rang doorbell and knocked. No answer. FINALLY, Mom came down from upstairs to let me back in (the whole time thinking I would open the door for whoever was knocking and ringing the doorbell). We laughed about it, but it’s really hard to feel competent when you make a mistake like that in the first week!!!

Nannies share their bad and awkward nannying moments.

*Also very embarrassing, my first nanny job EVER, I had to take care of a one year old girl (I only babysat older kids before). Mom asked me if I need help with the first diaper change, of course I declined, I mean how hard can it actually be? Very confident in my skills I changed that diaper like I owned it. After a while we noticed that there is poop on Mia, turns out I put the diaper on wrong, and there was poop coming out everywhere. I wasn’t so confident anymore and accepted help! Probably the most embarrassing thing ever!

*Awkward nanny moment: took my little guy out and picked him up out of the stroller forgetting the diaper bag was on the back of the stroller so it toppled over in front of a ton of people. Luckily he was in my arms and safe! Oops.

*One of my most embarrassing moments as an au pair (nanny), my first week alone with the kids, my little boy slipped and cut his lip open, there was a lot of blood and I freaked out! I immediately called my host mom informing her of what happened. She then tells me to calm down, drink 6 shots (which was a joke), and that this happens all the time. I was very embarrassed as it was my first week!

*My most awkward moment was the day was when I had to tell my charges grandma not to bring dinner over when she let us know last minute because mom had already made a crockpot… mom had woked on so hard on it & had made her late for her appointment. I did not wanna get in between that lol.

*My most embarrassing moment as a nanny was carrying around a toddler at the splash pad and unbeknownst to me, she had untied my bathing suit top, and I had been walking around with one of my tatas hanging out

*Most awkward moment, so far, has been when I forgot to make a note that I was going in late the next day and showed up 3 hours early. I walked in like nothing was amiss and my DB (very kindly) reminded me that I wasn’t needed that day until 10am. I was so embarrassed!! I offered to leave, which was even more awkward, but was told that it was fine and that they’d just go into work like normal. Ever since, if they ask me to come in late, I always make a note (with an alarm and reminder) so I don’t cheat them, and me, out of a leisurely morning!!

*My most awkward moment was when I had 2 kids in the car and was just going to pick up the third from school….
I was reversing the massive car out of the long, narrow driveway when Grandpa turned up at that exact time and decided to sneak up to surpri
se the 4 year old in the window.
He sure surprised the kids. And me! I hit the gas accidently, instead of the brakes and plowed into the stone wall and burst the cars tire.
Everyone said after how lucky it was that grandpa was there to do the pick up up since I crashed. I think grandpa was lucky not to be run over!
And I had to pay to replace the tire.

*Ahhhh, there are many! But sure the first one you never forget: I was walking around Harvard yard with my very first charge, a 3 year old, when I first came to the US as an Au Pair. I told him I had to go potty and asked if he had any ideas of where to go. He said he didn’t but always so helpful, he decided to ask a group of very handsome Harvard students about it: “My big sister needs to go potty. Do you know where the potty is?” 18 year old me turned bright red and without thinking, trying to “fix” the embarrassment, I said: “Party! We need to find out where the *party* is!” That was probably the worst thing I could have said…. They just laughed…. ahhhhhh, those days….

*A kid asked if brushed my teeth once while I was teaching him swim lessons. lol. (I use to have a discolored front tooth.)

*Awkward moment? With kids, there’s been too many to count!! My 3yo likes pointing out that he has a penis and Miss Amanda has a “‘gina” even in front of DB!! Then his brother likes to ask my new husband when Miss Amanda will have a baby in her belly. lol I love how they have no filter!!

*I nanny for 4 little boys under the age of 7. The 3 youngest still don’t quite understand the concept of breast and where babies come from…they would frequently ask me in front of their parents, if “I have a baby in there” while poking at my breast. And another good awkward moment, is with the current family I work for, I iron everyone in the families clothes….including underwear. Awkward!

*My most awkward experience as a nanny? Why, there are so many to choose from! I think I’ll go with two weeks ago, I made the mistake of wearing a tank top on a 90 degree day AND take a toddler to the bank with me. The youngin’ in question recently weaned off breast feeding abc is obsessed with “boobies” haha. Short story long, I had my tank top pulled down right as I got to the teller by my very gleeful toddler in tow. Very romantic, great day to wear a mostly sheer American apparel bra.

*Awkward moment as a nanny? When my boss came home, having to explain why one of her kids was running around but naked and the other one was asking to eat her poop. Talk about awkward!

  1. Yesterday, the 3 year old boy found a green tampon in my purse and wanted to show it to everyone(I mean, it’s quite fancy). I knew that making a big deal over it would only cause extra discomfit on my part so I did my best to play it cool. On the way home from the park we stopped to see the neighbor’s chickens. Little guy showed the chickens my tampon and one of them pulled it right out of the applicator. They all started fighting over it and pecking at it. We were both laughing and I was worried one of them would actually try to eat it. The neighbor came out to see us and I had to explain to him why he might find a tampon in his chicken coop. Little guy continued to show anyone he could the applicator.

  2. The other day I walked into work as always! I started to make the babies milk before I go wake them up. I work in a very large house so it is sometimes uncertain if someone else is home or not. My bosses are both VERY private professional people. (I don’t even know how old they are) As I was making milk I herd someone coming down stairs & into the kitchen, I turned around to say good morning and the father was bare butt naked!!!!!!! Both of us just looked at eachother in shock!!! And terror !!! I quickly put my hand out to cover the view and turned around. I totally feel like I violated him knowing how private they are !!! He later that morning apologized and said he had lost track of time. I know one day I’ll look back and laugh but for now I’m avoidning eye contact !!!!
